Re: Transfer Contacts from WM to Android?
I'm using Gmail through Outlook on my PC. Currently WMDC/ActiveSync keeps my Outlook Contacts and Calendar synchronized with my WM phone, and my phone gets emails from Gmail/Google.
I'd like to keep my Outlook Contacts and Calendar synchronized with Gmail/Google, so that they will in turn sync with Android on my phone. I assume that Google Sync will do this, but will it also sync Contact pictures? If not, how can I do this? |

I've found a few programs by other people that claim to work, but I'd like to stick with an "official" Google app, if there is one. |

Once that is working, then I will use these mobile Google Sync tools to keep the calendar and contacts on my phone in sync with Gmail on Google: http://www.google.com/sync/windowsmobile.html and http://www.google.com/sync/android.html I assume it is these mobile Google Sync apps that you are saying will sync contact pictures, correct? |

Re: Transfer Contacts from WM to Android?
::facepalm::
Google sync for mobile devices isn't something you download. Google came up with a protocol that mimics Exchange Activesync's, so that you would be able to use push Gmail on any device that supports push sync via activesync (WinMo, iPhone, RIM, WebOS, etc). This capability is already built in! So... if you set up activesync on winMo to use Google sync (by going into activesync on your phone and setting up the server as per the instructions here http://www.google.com/support/mobile...36&topic=14299), you will sync your contacts, calendar, etc with gmail (and get push gmail notifications, sweet!). Then, when you switch over to Android, log in using the same google account, and viola! WinMo and Droid are in sync, no matter which you use!! Can't get any simpler... |

Re: Transfer Contacts from WM to Android?
this is the method i followed
http://www.google.com/support/mobile...36&topic=14299 i basically opened the ActiveSync app, clicked Set Up your device to sync, and followed the instructions. the screenshots arent in the exact same order as it does on the phone if ur not on 6.5 or 6.5.x, but the input fields are the same. for me it did everything wirelessly which is nice because its a lot of work for me to get my ppc to connect with my laptop via activesync |
Re: Transfer Contacts from WM to Android?
So, ActiveSync/WMDC syncs WM on the phone, and Google Sync syncs mobile and Gmail, so Gmail ends up with everything that was on Outlook. Then after switching to Android, set up Google Sync on that phone, and the phone is in sync again, right?
There is still the missing piece of being able to sync directly between Outlook on the PC and Gmail, but this is a start. Thanks, dishe! Can anyone recommend a good free solution to sync Outlook and Gmail? Or maybe it's worth it to just spend $14.99 and buy gSyncit: http://www.daveswebsite.com/software/gsync/ |

Re: Transfer Contacts from WM to Android?
wow you guys are making it way harder than it needs to be all you need to do is pull your contacts off your phone to a csv file with http://handheld.softpedia.com/progDo...oad-70426.html then import contacts into your gmail account. this is the pain for me i had to go into the contacts and make sure the phone numbers were in the correct fields (in gmail) idk why i had ot do this but i did anyways.....yeah if you add ur gmail account to android it automatically syncs them as for facebook...it doesnt work in froyo for contacts

Today I run windows. Maybe tomorrow I'll try out Android for a day, and add a contact. When I pop back into Windows, the contact will be there because the Google sync server acting like an exchange server keeps all info, well... in sync! IT DOESN'T GET EASIER THAN THAT, AND THE FEATURE IS BUILT IN TO BOTH WM AND ANDROID ALREADY! Those of you who asked about how to then sync it with outlook... that has nothing to do with the original question here AFAIK. In fact, ever since I started using OTA sync like this, I sort of stopped using outlook at all. Its a personal preference to use it, but you clearly don't need it. |

Well, that's not entirely true, I use it with a REAL exchange server, but if not for that I really wouldn't use it at all, and ditch it for something like Thunderbird or just webmail access. WM syncs OTA with Google, which it THINKS is an exchange server (so you set up like an exchange setup). The Android OS also syncs with the same server. All over the Air. There is no missing link. If you want to use outlook, that's your own prerogative. You can, but you'll need to either buy some sync software, or take Google's official apps sync for a spin (annual fee on that one, but less than a real exchange server costs per month). The official apps sync I think mimics an exchange server for outlook at well (current free-level google sync only supports mobile activesync protocols. Outlook's protocol is more complicated). |
Re: Transfer Contacts from WM to Android?
I know I need to get out of the Outlook mentality, but I've used Outlook on my PC forever. In fact the only reason I got a smart phone in the first place was because BitPim didn't support any of the phones I wanted. ActiveSync (and now WMDC) keep my Outlook contacts and calendar in sync on my Windows Mobile phone. My work uses Outlook, and my home email is Gmail, but I read it with Outlook.
Currently I create and manage all of my contacts and calendar events with Outlook on my PC and WMDC keeps my phone in sync with it automatically. If that will still work, and Google Sync keeps my phone and Gmail synchronized, that should be all I need. |

However, Android is none of those things. You won't be syncing Android with Outlook out of the box without a plugin or premium service. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this thread is discussing keeping your PIM in sync between both WM and Android. I'm not really sure how Outlook fits into all this since you wouldn't really be using it with Android anyhow... |
Re: Transfer Contacts from WM to Android?
Another thing is if you have Google sync enabled and you IMPORT .CSV google gets rid of them, happens to me in both my HD2 and TP2. I am going to try Google Apps Sync now...
EDIT: I could only find Google Calendar Sync, do I need to sync my WM phone and not my computer? |

Re: Transfer Contacts from WM to Android?
I have read through this and am still confused on how to do this. I used to use Microsoft Myphone for all of my contact but since making the switch to Android I cannot get my contacts switched over. Anyone know how to transfer from one to the other?
|
Re: Transfer Contacts from WM to Android?
Actually I cheated a little bit, I tried my email address and left checkmark to ActiveSync detect settings and after entering my username and password I got to the point where it asked for the server (m.google.com) and I logged on here and checked all the pages until I saw it... O:-)

Re: Transfer Contacts from WM to Android?
I tried sync2 and like it so far. I've only been using Android for a day now though so I'm sure there's time for many different things to go haywire

Re: Transfer Contacts from WM to Android?
I used Google Sync and successfully got my Outlook contacts (with pictures) and calendar copied to Google. I then had to delete the Outlook email on my phone because I need the MS Exchange Server account for my work email.
WM phones only support one Exchange Server account, which sucks. Does Android allow multiple accounts? |
Re: Transfer Contacts from WM to Android?
You can also use Sprite Migrate, it will also copy your text messages, call logs, etc.

Apparently, all the prior posts ignored the fact that WM only allows 1 Exchange Server Account & on my TP2 at least, it was already occupied by an Hotmail account. So all the prior instructions, I was confused as to how to add an exchange m.google.com server. |
Re: Transfer Contacts from WM to Android?
just as the previous poster ^ said, if you setup your gmail(google account) in Activesync, it'll automatically sync the pics of your contacts without you having to manually do it. I personally did it so I know and understand your frustration. If you just export the .csv file from outlook and then import it to your gmail there won't be any pics for your contacts. Be it your in Android or WinMo, once you setup your syncing, pics and all data for contacts will be seamless in either os environment. if you need more detailed help just let me know and I'll give you step by step directions. I'm here to help just like everyone else.

Re: Transfer Contacts from WM to Android?
so how I transfered my WM contacts to gmail. I do not have/want outlook so I used this method. :D
get pimbackup backup just your contacts DO NOT use the binary option the backed up file name will be .pib change that to .zip and unzip it you will find a contacts.csv I recommend editing this file of anything in the NOTES section. You only want the display name in there. Using this method your pics will NOT xfer now log into your gmail account. click on your contacts. click on the more options and then import. import your .csv file into gmail your done. I know it is a long way around to do it but it does work and it is relatively simple, easy, and fast |
Re: Transfer Contacts from WM to Android?
Why does my contacts keep reverting back to LASTNAME, FIRSTNAME format after a google sync?
