Ultimately, this is probably good for the ecosystem as a whole, but I worry about this doing for Android app quality what sites like geocities and tripod as well as social networking sites like myspace did for HTML and web standards.

I think App Inventor is a great idea for putting together quick prototypes, especially on the UI side. If there was some way to get at any code created behind the scenes and brought into eclipse, I think it's even better for getting a prototype implemented.

Oh dear mother of god. I've been waiting on this FOREVER.
A program like this has wondered in and out of my imagination for years now, starting with Windows Mobile. I remember when Palm released a dev kit for WebOS that made it easy to edit graphics within the operating system. This is like that, but only better.

Couldn't of come at a better time. I've been trying to learn JavaScript via Eclipse and I'm going borderline insane trying to write this garbage.

I'm debating on naming my first born "Google" in honor of such a miraculous program.

Now my next step is to push out a bunch of great apps so I can get into Google I/O next year and receive a Nexus Two. :P

Ha ha, come on! Have a little more faith!

After reading & researching App Inventor, it looks to me as another score for Android in the OS development market. Android has now released a powerful yet intuitive UI program for creating apps which can even utilize the sensors, GPS and other core functions of the phone.

Hardcore developers will likely still use the SDK but this will allow some of us lesser-programming savvy to create and prosper. Besides, even if a few "weaker" apps are created, the potential for learning, expansion and greatness is there. Having one more tool to do so can only help...

This makes me think of Flash with ActionScript. For those who aren't hard core developers you can draw yourself through flash with simple transitions etc. But for those who want the bad arse effects, you use ActionScript.

For those worried about all the junk it'll put out there: that's a good thing! More junk = more opportunities for good stuff to be made. Think about it this way: someone has an awesome idea, but has no way of implementing it by using the SDK. But now, we have this easy to use interface and the same person who would have said "someone else can do it" and let the great idea die just like that, can now make it happen.

Oh yeah! I like it. I've been hurting my brain with eclipse and the sdk. This will be much easier.

What I can't understand is why they can't come up with a FULL SCREEN CALLER ID! I haven't paid for an app in like.... never but that is something I'd pay for.

You can only download part of it the main program is cloud based it has to run through your browser. So you go to the website log in download the other pieces you need then you can start developing BUT only after it goes live it is still closed beta right now.
