Advanced Task Killer...yay or nay?

I've heard both good and bad about installing this on our Epics? What's everyone's thought about this and/or their experiences with it?

Re: Advanced Task Killer...yay or nay?

I am using it now but prefer the Express Task Manager Free app. It allowed you to kill at the services level. I had to factory default my Epic and could not find the Express Task Manager in the Android Market or AppBrain.

I use it and have no problems. It definitely helps keep free RAM and save battery life.

Re: Advanced Task Killer...yay or nay?

I also use it.. I keep the widget on my main home screen and tap it every once in awhile to close open apps.. Although I'm not really sure if this is necessary.. Android does a fairly good job of closing apps that are idle or not being used and managing memory.. I have heard that it is not at all necessary in Froyo due to better memory/task management.. this is just from things I've heard.. I was going to do a bit of research to see if this is the case and if it really even saves battery life. I am assuming since background tasks use little to no cpu that the amount of battery life saved would be minimal, if any...

Anyone have more knowledge/insight on this?

Re: Advanced Task Killer...yay or nay?

i have it installed, but never use it. i prefer the built in task manager. it only shows running apps that are using memory. i think when i start killing a bunch of stuff, my email stops checking and my maps and internet take a lot longer to load, so i pretty much dont jack with it.

I used it for awhile but I think Samsung's Program Monitor widget is a better solution. It tells me how many programs I left open and its an easy way to get to them and close them. I would forget to check ATK, and I think it actually slowed my phone down.

Wirelessly posted (Samsung Epic : Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.1-update1; en-us; SPH-D700 Build/ECLAIR) AppleWebKit/530.17 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/530.17)

I use stock & it serves its purpose .

I voted yay.

I don't trust android to "manage" my memory. I'd rather have it use memory when I open an app. So I close apps that I never opened and the ones I did open.

Re: Advanced Task Killer...yay or nay?

Can you set ATK to replace the stock task killer, so that when you hold the home button and then hit "task manager" or whatever button it is in the box that pops up, ATK would open?

that specifically talks about the changes with froyo...

"But starting in Android 2.0, memory management got much, much better. Apps couldn't spawn processes only to leave them forever. The OS would gauge the level of system RAM, and close unneeded background services. Users on phones like the Droid could clearly tell that this was happening. With only 256MB of RAM, some memory-heavy apps would reliably cause the OS to close other apps running in the background. This is why many apps now use persistent notifications. Having that notification running will keep a background process it is connected to from being ended"

part im after, i see froyo part too.

Ok, I went ahead and uninstalled ATK. While I think it was doing a fine job, I just didn't think that it was doing the right job. It seemed to drain just a bit more of my battery and at this point I think I'd rather monitor the changes that I have made then to continue to tweak battery performance.....nomesayin.

late,

p.s., that article that DW posted was very interesting...good find my man.

Hmmmm...This is indeed a very interesting thread. I actually have both Juice defender and ATK installed and I get very great battery life. My thought was that ATK kinda sped up my device after killing apps. It seemed to scroll a bit faster and was more responsive and Juice defender extended my battery from 8 to 9 hours to about 14 to 18 hours. I might just uninstall both of them and see how my phone holds up. If any better or worse. I do have startup auditor installed which I rarely use. I might give auto start a try and see if it has any better features.

then try killing it and i bet you notice then, (better)

mlin 10-10-2010 01:07 AM

I tried disabling my task killer for a few days and it seems my battery life was a little worse. I can typically get through a full day without charging though without atk I was needing to charge around 5pm. Maybe a coincidence but I have gone back to using it. I experience no ill consequences from doing so, so I guess I'll just keep with it and juice defender.

Tapa tapa tapa

Okay, so I updated to the DI18, did not install juice or the task killer........AND........My battery life is fabulous!!! I took it off the charger at 8 this morning and its now 10:03 pm and I still have 2 bars (checked from the camera). I took it off the charger and made a few calls. Downloaded some games. Tried them. Uninstalled some of them. Played some other games I have while waiting in line at the zoo. Took pictures of every animal I seen and a few more extras. Made a few more calls, now Im home and am playing some games online and I cant believe I havent gotten the battery low pop up!! I am Very impressed with this. I do not see a need for juice or task killer either. Thanks Darren for the input and help.
