A month or two ago I read that the Slate would at least be delayed further because, according to a quote from a HP rep, "the slate is not able to be as responsive as the iPad." This isn't surprising. I hate apple's products because of their artificially imposed software limitations, but I have to say they have their priorities right when it comes to the responsiveness of the user experience. Anything that the user interacts with or sees animate should be top priority and low overhead. Apple gets this, while Windows Mobile is still, after so many years, a terribly laggy and pathetic user experience. And it is entirely a software problem, not hardware. Just look at how snappy Android is on TP2 vs any Windows Mobile rom. On windows, if I'm in Opera Mobile and I hit END to go back to the today screen, if a web page is currently loading it could take up to 10 seconds for the transition (PIE is worse) and once the today screen is visible it's not very responsive. On the other hand, Android on the same device will transition to the home screen almost instantly regardless of what is going on in the browser.
