my font cabs contain only the CPR's (\windows\) and the font (\windows\fonts\)
my icon cabs contain only a dll (resides in \windows\)

when you change fonts around what gets overwritten are the CPR's (which contain formatting data for everything on the home screen)
when you change icon cabs all that gets changed is the one dll file which as far as I can tell is not even mentioned in the CPR. maybe this sheds some more light..
