Here is some interesting, albeit costly ($800+ on eBay) and limiting (AT&T and UMTS 850-band only)... It seems that the Australian version of the Touch HD uses the same band of 3G that AT&T uses partially here in the U.S., namely the UMTS 850 band...
Below is a great map of where AT&T's UMTS 850 band is being utilized... From here

Interesting. My girlfriend has AT&T from her job, and she also gets union discounts from them like me. Plus this coverage map will interest her.

yes, its the 8285 i believe, not the touchHD8282.

I have this phone, it is excellent.
The reception, the HSUPA speeds and the general "H" pickup are better than any other gsm type phone that I have tried. (Although my old CDMA RevA Titan in Toronto was faster with a lower latency/ping) AT&T is aggressively expanding it's 850 support, an Rogers/Fido are both very strong in this area. The price was not excellent - $700 unlocked. |

How is it in non-850 bands pid? Strong EDGE pick up?

very good with EDGE speeds as well..... but not as fast at the 3G.
