i havent tried it yet with a wire, i use wmwifirouter on it and it works great. with the wmwifirouter, my laptop actually loaded webpages faster than if i used my sprint datacard.

you to have to shell out a few bucks for it, but it is well worth it

You might also want to look at PDAnet, too. I couldn't get WMwifirouter to work right on my GSM Treo Pro, but PDAnet worked with no tweaking. Others have had the opposite experience. So, try the test periods & see which works for you.
