Charging via USB

Has anyone else had any luck convincing the 9c to charge from anything other than the wall wart? I've got a friend with one and we just can't seem to find ANY machine/device (even with activesync installed) that can convince the 9c to charge.

I've even tried a cable from a 2.5" drive and somehow the 9c can detect that it's not an "authorized" cable (but pulling 500ma from two different usb hubs should provide enough power, shouldn't it?)

Any hints?

Re: Charging via USB

I believe you have to have ActiveSync 4.5 setup in order for the PC to recognize the usb charging function

I had the reverse happening to me.. I could charge usb but my home charger wouldn;t work. I just took the battery out and put it back in and it works with both now.

Re: Charging via USB

wierd, I think I charge my phone more with my usb cable cuz it is also easier to install apps and other crap onto my sd card....

I am wishing I had a card that was bigger than 2gb....heh for $16 I guess it was a deal

Re: Charging via USB

ActiveSync isn't required to charge the device. Make sure it's a USB 2.0 port you're plugging into. Try plugging into the back of the computer.

Re: Charging via USB

It's just strange that it's SO picky. Not that activesync is necessary, but that is a PITA (Pain in the ...) but that using a cable from a 2.5" notebook USB drive causes the Q to get totally pissy ("that's not an authorized cable!") when all that I was looking to do was to get the thing charged. It's really hard to use when it's got less than 10% power left and you're no where near a "activesync" equipped pc and the charger is 15 miles away and there are 100 USB connectors in the room. (he works at a lan center).

Re: Charging via USB

I donno I guess, I use the standard cord that came with my phone itself. But yeah, really frustrating isn't it. My guess is its along the lines of what explicit had to say, with the usb port not being 2.0. If it is an older computer....could be an issue

ActiveSync does NOT need to be installed to charge the phone. The power still runs to the phone without it.

Re: Charging via USB

I thought I'd read in the docs that without activesync it can power the phone but not charge the phone but we're finding that it's really picky about ports. The general references I've seen show it pulling 850ma which is certainly over USB spec unless it's a "Charging USB" port which, I thought, said it was allowed 1 A.

Yet USB ports that power my treo 700wx (which really appears to be a serious power sucker) are refused by the picky moto Q...

Re: Charging via USB

I only have ActiveSync on my laptop, but haven't had any problems charging on any other computer. But I have noticed that the Q9c is a finicky phone...
