SMS to field fn lock fix - sort of...
After a month of not being able to get used to this, I tried installing the Palm threaded SMS/smiley program for WM6. Since it is a different program entirely, it solves the problem. I just thought I would share in case there is anyone else out there who is having this problem. Everything seems to be working fine.

Something fishy popped up and now it is sending multiple texts. So I just did a hard reset to start from scratch. The version I had could have been old. I thing I will try the smiley sms on xda-developers next to see what happens.
