I take it that this means a hard reset like any other rom?

The Samsung instructions don't say to hard reset, but it couldn't hurt. Here is what they say:

The upgrade has now been completed. Click on Finish to terminate the Upgrade Tool. The SCH-i920 will automatically reboot. (That is just a soft reset.) At this time the handset should be synced with ActiveSync 4.5 to restore previously saved data.

After completion of the DC23 upgrade, please verify the software on the phone is accurate.
  • To check the software version on the handset, click Start > Settings > Advanced Settings > System > Version > Device The PDA version should show S:i920.1.0V.DC23.21889
  • The PHONE version should show S:i920.1.0V.DA19 (I don't think the 1.0 is correct)
After verification of the software version on your phone, type in *228 and press Talk, select option 2. The network should perform an over the air (OTA) update to the handset and apply the latest network updates to the handset.

I wish that we could find a way to release Swype with custom rom's.

That update was useless as far as I can see.

Ohhhh, this is going to be a very good day for you!

Ninja4Hire's ROMs are great, and he has 2 versions (well, actually 4), another one at Modaco http://www.modaco.com/content/verizo...m-v1-1m-21898/, both have exactly what you are looking for, and the XDA site takes it up another notch.

But you may want to wait until he gets the new update built in.

Anyone know what the "Applied Verizon Wireless ERI Device Requirement Update" is? Could be a lockdown of some sort.

And it does look like a hard reset. From the Samsung instructions:
__________________________________________________ _______________
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The Upgrade Process Will Erase ALL User Data From The Device.
Please Ensure that All Critical Information has Been Backed Up Before Applying this Upgrade.
  • Any installed programs and/or updates will need to be re-installed after applying this upgrade.
__________________________________________________ _______________
My personal recommendation is to back up your data (not programs), do a hard reset, then apply the update, then hard reset again before reinstalling.

Not only a hard reset, but it wipes your "My Storage" as well!!!!

A flash is similar to a hard reset with regard to erasing data, or rewriting, but I have flashed many times without adding a hard reset, and the phone works fine.

The quote above about memory in no way indicates that a hard reset is required. On the other hand, it couldn't hurt.
