Noob kernal question

I gave up my Touch pro for my new Moment. Very happy so far. I have flashed my TP many many times, no worries there. So, I'm new to "rooting" and I don't want to mess it up. A few noob questions..

What is the latest Kernal? I see 14.3 but the wiki ways 14.4? Did I miss the link?

Also, there is a ton of SPH_900 files on megauploads. "update" ones, "patchnoob" ones? Which is the proper link for rooting from a stock CL14 phone?

Is there an easy way to flash back to stock for the upcoming 2.1 update?

Thanks
Jeff

Re: Noob kernal question

you need to read the HOW TOs that are stickied

kernel versions change rapidly and usually the wiki shows the new version before it is posted for download

the how tos will answer your questions.

YES, I did read the "HOW TO" which I see your wrote and , actually, it does not clearly say what file it is.

There are 59 files on the list. Some I can see are older versions. Some look like complete ROMS and others (the smaller ones) are the kernel I guess.

I don't want to brick my phone.

For example I see..
ZE14.3_update.zip
SPH-M900_ZE14.3_KERN_SPR.tar.7z (I'm guessing its this one - but I don't want to guess)

Find the latest Zefie kernel and download it
Latest Kernel info (http://wiki.midnightchannel.net/inde...ie%27s_Kernels)
Latest Kernel list (http://www.megaupload.com/?f=HMZJZUQW)
What this means is go to this link first http://wiki.midnightchannel.net/inde...ie%27s_Kernels

From that information find the latest Kernel listed
For right now ZE14.4 is the most recent as of 3/14/2010 at 612PM

then go to this link http://www.megaupload.com/?f=HMZJZUQW
and search for ZE14.4, if you do not see it there that means Zefie hasn't made it available yet so you'll have to get ZE14.3. It does take a little bit of effort to find the recent kernel because they change so rapidly.
You can usually find the latest kernel on the last page, just click the NEXT at the bottom until you get to the last page and start from there..

Good luck!

That actually is a good question about the update file. I know for a fact that SPH-M900_ZE14.3_KERN_SPR.tar.7z is the kernal and the file you will want to use with the tutorial. I used it and I am running ZE14.3 now. Just make sure you rename the Zefie file and either take the sprint file out of the directory or rename it and you will be fine. I will do a little research on some of the other forums to find out what the update files are and how to apply them. Also I wouldn't be too worried about bricking your phone. It is actually harder to do than you think. Just don't mess around with the device drivers and keep a backup around and you should be ok.

THANK YOU skyj635! :headbang:
That is exactly what I was asking.

Also, glad to know it's tougher to brick the phone then I thought. I have zero android experience, and I don't want to learn the hard way!

BEFORE YOU FLASH

make sure cl14 is out of the folder, first time i tried to flash to joey's 1.8 i left cl14, and though it was renamed it still flashed it instead of the kernal, so i lost all my files, apps, etc. and was left with stock cl14. best to be safe and move it out.

No problem man, glad I could help. Just in case you wanted to know, I found out what the update file is. That allows you to flash your phone without using the Sprint update tool. You have to have a new kernel already to get the recovery tools but after that you can save that update file to your SD card and flash your phone without a laptop/PC. You can use recovery or an app called bmlwrite to flash your kernel from your SD card. Good for devs or people that like to upgrade their kernel alot. bmlwrite comes with the joey/speedrabbit kernel but not sure if it is on zefie's. If you are using the Sprint update tool, then you'll wanna use the file we used as you already know.

Thanks skyj635. I already rooted my phone but during the process was left wondering what the "update" files were for.
