I have been using Batti, it loads a bar across the top, uses color to show how much battrery you have left.
Do you have the clock on the task bar, when you open a program?
If you do that is where the change is, I think if you go to Settings>Clock & Alarm, see if Display clock in title bar in all applications is checked, if it is that will replace the battery icon, just uncheck it, personilly I love having the clock display, but then again I use Batti as I mentioned.
I hope this helps
Terry

Use BattlClock. It gives you a percentage and a clock together. Works great.

I agree with Tmair. Batti is the way to go. It took me a while to set it up for my liking, but once I did it works great!
