It may have been a decision to make the phone more compact...by including ports on top only (usb and the 3.5mm) left them with room to put the battery on the bottom...they couldn't put the battery on the top anyways because of the camera so this may have been the most compact way to implement it.

It has its cons when your usb port is on the bottom of the pc..and makes a dock questionable....but it does make it easier to use as a audio player from the pocket and if you got usb ports from monitor its simple enough...

Also if you have usb addons such as IR ports or some payment processor on it, it makes it easier...

so it has its ups and downs to be positioned like that...but in the end my guess it was to make it most compact as possible..
