ATTENTION PPCGeeks UNIFIED ROM TEAM: PLEASE CHECK IN HERE!

Hello All!

While we're waiting for Wideawake to setup the project forum, I thought we'd get started and not hold up the project.

The next phase, now that the project team has been selected, is to determine if we go with AKU 3.3 or 3.5.

The voting was running roughly 80-20 in favor of 3.5, however, not all of those voters will be developing the new ROM.

My question to the team developers and analysts is this:

Do we take on 3.5, even though it's a much more difficult task and could potentially take longer than 3.3? Please consider the fact that the membership has overwhelmingly requested 3.5.

The choice is yours. We will accept whatever choice the ROM development team comes up with.

SINCE THIS IS THE FIRST OFFICIAL PROJECT "WORK" THREAD, PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND IF YOU ARE NOT A MEMBER OF THE UNIFIED ROM PROJECT TEAM. FEEL FREE TO START A NEW THREAD, OR PM ME IF YOU WANT TO COMMENT ON WORK DONE HERE.

Well I don't feel strongly one way or the other, but I will say that in the last couple of days it seems like the "known issues" list for AKU 3.5 has shrunk drastically. It may be better to look ahead and not behind.

However, there is something appealing about offering people the choice of two kitchens... that way if someone discovers an as-of-yet undiscovered bug in 3.5 they can revert to an official 3.3 kitchen instead. Getting the 3.3 kitchen done would probably not take much time.

Like I said, I don't have a strong opinion either way--happy to go with the flow on this one.

Yeah, I'm fine either way, but I will play the devil's advocate for a moment:

The PPC/XV6800 (Herald?) will be out in the next 3 or 4 months. I wonder how long we will be able to sustain interest in this after folks begin migrating to the new device. We may have one shot to get this right before we lose manpower. Why not take that shot with 3.5?

Again, I'm coll either way, but this is just something to think about.

I don't really have a strong opinion one way or the other either, but I would point out something regarding the "devil's advocate" position - how many people are honestly going to be jumping to the new phone immediately, particularly when its advantages won't be that great once you factor in what we're doing here? Just a thought.... At this point, it's somewhat looking like the list of issues to still be addressed is fairly minimal on both AKU 3.3 and 3.5, so it'd be really cool if we could just hammer both of them out.

You make a good point, but there always early-adopters, and imagine that the hard-core among us might be in that category.

I have no problem with doing both, but I would suggest that, if we do, we should tackle one at a time.

as one of the voters in the 20%, the one who fixed USB, and now apparently the smart dialer, i'm ready to change my vote. 3.5 has its advantages politically and otherwise, but the issues w/ the smartdialer were driving the user community nuts. As we have a work-around for that issue, i see no reason not to go with the 3.5 genre.

However that being said i also see no reason not to back-support the 3.3 on the work we do. Essentially we should put primary focus on 3.5, and then use 3.3 to make sure what we do works there, or if not one way or the other we should understand WHY.

I still think 3.5 is the way to go... we're closer now and have some good ideas on the 3.3 vs 3.5 bugs, leaving just the major problems that are also in 3.3 (BTPAN) and the .NET/Contacts issue as the really big ones.

The rest we just need to nail down

With the recent advances with 3.5, I have to say that 3.5 is the way to go. I did not expect to resolve issues thsi fast, but now we are only left with minor issues to deal with. I say we move forward with 3.5.

well, from what I observed, on this team the only "3.3" voters were colonel and I.. Seems we've both moved on to 3.5.... so is this a done deal?

Sorry, for the late vote, but I went to sleep at 1:00 and missed the thread (You guys are all either out West, or simply nuts!) I vote for 3.5. Shawn and IMCOKEMAN seem to have been making good progress in the last few says of cleaning up many of the issues in 3.5, so I think it makes sense to try to complete it.
