It is not very useful for the palm in particular due to heavy customization from palm. If you remove or reduce the top bar, once any application runs there will be blanks in that area. If you remove/reduce the bottom bar, it works fine till there is a call coming in and the in call menu bar will stuck there. I suspect that the call menu bar is always there and is overlayed by the today menu. Once you remove the today window menu bar and the call menu is enabled due to the incoming call, it can not deactivate the call menu bar afterwards and the only way to correct it is soft reset.
