Google Maps: A "How to" on the 700wx.

Yeah, this is posted a dozen times on various boards but still, this is the easiest way I've seen to get Google Maps up and running on the Treo 700wx.

1) download and install J9 app in attachment

2) go to http://google.com/gmm in PIE

3) Select High End phone and install

Now just run the J9 app and run Google Maps!

I have to admit...this setup with the softkey support (no touch screen) works very, very well on this device.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
After playing around a bit, I decided the freeware application Map4PDA is much more robust, easy to use and better program than just google maps (this has gmaps built in as well), so I suggest using that over the above. Get it here (you'll need CF 2.0):

File Type: zip imb_j9_for_gmaps_136.zip (826.7 KB, 183 views) Click for barcode!

Do you know if there is any benefit to running Google Maps rather than Map4PDA? I'm just wondering if I should use one than the other. Thanks.

well, I can't really say about maps4pda, though I would probably state that overall it IS a better solution that just gooogle maps. in fact maybe I'll throw it back on here and compare the two.

pibe38: maps4pda does gmaps, vir.earth moblie plus like 2 other mapping services, you can even overlay them.

now, map4pda DOES use CF 2.0, which probably slows it down. How much compared to java? I dunno...

You need an external GPS for that I believe, not the phone GPS included in our devices.

EDIT: Question. After installing Google maps through the Java applet, can I delete the .jad file downloaded from the Google site? Or is it still in use? I tried looking for where it got installed but didn't find the place.

I think they are found under IBM IVE, which is under \my documents, if I recall. And no, I don't think you can delete the Java applet without deleting Gmaps.

So after using both GoogleMaps alone and Map4PDA, even though it's slower to load up at first, I have to give my respect to Map4PDA.

It's way cooler, has tons more functions, and is very, very powerful. Give it as shot:

Virtual Earth for Mobile and Map 4 Pda seem very similar. The only thing is that Virtual Earth does not show local traffic information for my area, so I need Google maps to get any traffic data.
