Is there a way to show individual outstanding tasks on the today screen?

I would get yourself Today Agenda. It's a total calendar/appointment/task plug in that is very customizable, etc. Search for it in the download section.

i agree, todayagenda kicks ass. very simple and customizable.

I use TodayAgenda for my appointments and tasks as well.
