New to smartphones..question about auto disconnecting emails

Hi, I just got a Treo 700WX and am loving it.

I am new to Windows Mobile 5 and have a quick question.

When I check my Gmail via POP3 in the messaging software provided with the phone, I get a "EV<--/-->" logo at the top of my phone which shows that I am connected to "Hight Speed Data (Dial-Up)".

I have it set to check my email ever 5 minutes.

Once it has checked the email, this logo stays connected.

QUESTON:

Is there a way to set it to auto disconnect once it has checked the email?

Thanks so much!

They seem to go grey, but it still says it is connected with a running timer.

Is this costing me air time?

Thank you again.

yes it is costing you DATA TIME. but you have unlimited data anyway (otherwise you wouldnt have this phone ) and if you are checking every 5 minutes its better for your battery life that it goes gray rather then turning off.

3 questions

1) do you really need to check your email every 5 minutes?
2) why do you care if it is costing you data time if you have unlimited data
3) you do have unlimited data, RIGHT?

I am on Telus Mobility in Canada, I'll have to go to my vendor and ask.

Thanks for all the info, I have had an awesome first experience here and hope to bring something to the community here.

I asked, and the time it is connected it does not cost anything, and I have 4 mb free a month which they say equals about 60 emails a day. This is more than enough.

I have my first 3 months free of Data, and I use the device for email/pda the most so it works out.

ouch, 4MB a month? That's nothing. I would make sure you're only downloading headers and that you're not downloading attachments. Remember that Pocket IE usage is eating in to that 4MB and remember that when you check your mail EVEN IF NOTHING IS IN THERE you're still using some of that data, maybe 10kb a connect or so.

I can use 4MB up in 5 minutes or less. Good luck to you and hope you enjoy your stay at PPCGeeks.
