It works. I used it before I sold my Treo 800.

I think you mean at least 1 amp.

The device will only pull in what it needs in which case 1A is sufficient. I have a sprint charger that puts out 2A and it works just fine.

What you don't want to do is put a charger that puts out less then 1A like those ebay crap chargers that put out 250ma. It will cause your device to brown out as it starves itself trying to trickle charge. You'll do more harm then good.

Re: 800w charger on a pre?

Ya I don't advise using it, Palm made specific wall chargers and vehicle chargers specifically for the Pre, due to the chip set in the battery I would recommend using the Pre chargers ONLY.

So what's the difference in using the USB cable attached to a PC? Is there a difference between the USB cable that came with the 800w, Pre, or one in a bag from a retailer?

Not 100% sure, I wouldn't think the USB cable would matter much. I know that on the 800w, as it runs Windows Mobile it only allows you to trickle charge on a PC (unless you have programs installed to increase it) where as the Pre and WebOS has the ability to do more than just trickle charge on a PC, it gives you that option when you plug it in, and it charges better than Windows Mobile, but I wouldn't think the USB cable would matter as much...
