Re: How-To: Root your Droid

You are way too vague to get any assistance. Your questions are the equivalent of, "what do yo do with a computer." Or "where can cars go."

Re: How-To: Root your Droid

This is going to sound stupid, but I know their is some cool stuff you can do with a rooted phone. I just want to know how to get other roms. I tried the root help app that install busybox, it kept force closing. I mainly want to learn how to get different ROMs

Re: How-To: Root your Droid

OK. Root is the equivalent of being an administrator it's not a file type. By default the only places on your phone that you have permission to write to is the SD Card and the Data file (the data file is where you install applications.) If you use a file directory app like Astro, you can navigate through the whole phone, system, sys etc... but you can't make any changes outside of the SD card.

With 'root' permission you can change the permissions for "read only" directories and folders to "read/write/delete".

That's all rooting does.

--------------------------------------------------------

ROM stands for 'Read Only Memory' basically you can now change the permission to Read/Write, delete the existing files and replace them with others, then change it back to read only. This is complex and one simple typo can cause the phone to stop working. To install a ROM you are basically deleting the 'System' folder and the "Boot" files on the phone and replacing them with modified files.

ROM's are available as Nandroid backups (backups from other phones) or can be installed with an installation file. ROMs can be found all over, but alot of them are currently located at alldroid.org.

Anyone point me in a direction of any progress in rooting the official 2.1?

Re: How-To: Root your Droid

I concur. A link to a step by step guide would be nice. I am running the official 2.1 from Verizon but would like to gain root. I don't really want to change to a different theme or anything at this point but would like the option.

I have found several good videos on youtube on how to flash the SBR recovery SBF file onto stock 2.1 and then flash a custom rom that gives you root but the problem is the videos don't tell you were to get the files. Maybe someone can provide links to the recovery file, RSD lite, and custom ROM of your choice.

All I did was type in "ROOT Motorola Droid" on youtube and a whole bunch of videos popped up. The ones I preferred were done by droid-life. If I can locate the files he used I may flash my Droid to the same ROM.

Re: How-To: Root your Droid

Yesterday I rooted my Droid for the first time and loaded my first ROM using Rom Manager. Everything went very smoothly and so far I am really liking it. I also put on Ad Free. Now I just need to learn how to theme and customize. I am loving my droid even more now than ever. I have yet to figure how SetCPU works so I am only running at 600MHz for now but I plan on pushing to at least 800 once I find out how it works. I have never OC'd, not even my computers so that is new to me.
