Alarm While Sleeping

I have an alltel touch with the newest alltel htc rom. For some reason, if the phone is asleep and the alarm goes off, I can't just hit dismiss and it stop the alarm. Dismiss doesn't even glow when pressed. The alarm may go off 3 times before I can hit dismiss.
If the phone isn't asleep, the dismiss button works fine.
