no sound in standby

i use gsplayer to stream howard stern during the day- other times just windows media player- i work on a rooftop with no one to bother me all day. With my older rom
version i could push the power button , shutting off the screen, and extending the battery and i could continue to listen to the music stream .Sometimes i use the wired handset and sometimes bluetooth. With this new rom when i push the power button the sound stops, when i push the power button again i have to push play again to start the sound again. Im sure many of you think this is dumb, and so easily fixed- but i searched all over and have no answer. Does anyone have an idea about how to fix this?
