freeze upon hooking up to pc

My touch pro has always connected to my computer just fine and if there was ever a problem it was simply with the pc not recognizing when it was hooked up and a restart would fix it (of the computer) Now when I hook it up it still has the charging ring going like it's charging but everything else is frozen even after i d/c and computer doesn't recognize it...any help??

Have you made any changes or installed any applications to the phone? Try backing up your contacts and messages and performing a hard reset.

how can i back up my contacts without being able to sync to outlook??
