Defragging my TP

Is it really necessary or does it even help for flash memory? And who makes a ppc version?

Re: Defragging my TP

I would say defragging a non mechanical drive is not necessary. Why? Because one of the main reasons to defrag a mechanical hard drive is to keep the arm from doing too much work. If a file is fragmented across a platter, the arm will have to seek a lot of surface area to get that file.

Since flash memory don't use a mechanical arm, I would doubt it would show much benefit. Also considering how small the memory is on this device, I think it would make it truly unnecessary to do so.

Re: Defragging my TP

well it is windows, and windows filesystems are prone to fragmentation, flash drive or not... NTFS/FAT, both are susceptible. TFAT is what WM uses.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa915463.aspx

but does anyone keep a rom running without flashing for long enough to even make a difference? lol

Re: Defragging my TP

The reason it is so important to defrag your computer is fragmented files require the read head to have to jump all over the HD platter to retrieve the vairious pieces of data slowing down the read time of the hard drive. Defrag lines everything up so this is prevented.

Since NAND Flash/RAM isnt using a spinning magnetic disk with a read head I cant imagine defragging is going to make a real big diffrence. Maybe I am wrong and I am sure someone will tell me if I am.

Re: Defragging my TP

Yes,.

The file system will get fragmented. That much I agree, however, will it degrade performance? I don't think so. Last time I checked, flash was small, and it doesn't take long for electrons to travel through a chip

Re: Defragging my TP

The random seek time for a flash is the same throughout the capacity of the flash drive. There is no performance gained for a defragmented drive. This is also the benefit of solid state drive (SSD) that manufactures are selling.
