GPS - HtC Touch Pro

i don't suscribe to Sprint's GPS services but would love to have GPS. I'm thinking about installing one of the GPS programs for mobile phones where I can buy the program myself but I'm not sure if it will work and whether not I will have to have sprint's GPS services to use it. Does anyone us GPS services from anywhere other than Sprint? Do I have to have sprint gps services to use Tom Tom or Garmin, etc?

All responses will be welcome.

BTW... I have a sprint HTC Touch Pro phone.

on VZN but i run garmin XT, google maps, and amazgps. all work fine and google and amaz are both free. find the HTC GPS tools cab and see if it will detect sats. set the com to 4, baudrate to 4800, click on function and set it to cold start and then click open port at the top of that screen.

Sprint TP here too. I have repeatedly run into the problem of using GoogleMaps or the service formerly known as Live Search (now called Bing!) as I go into the mountains only to find that a no-service area leaves me hanging.

I decided to try iGuidance2009 for WinMobile and I've been happy with that since. Needs no data connection, all the maps are right on a micro SD card, turn by turn voice directions included. Works for me.

TomTom and iGuidance working fine, but I find TomTom to be a lot more responsive.

Ok, where do you get TomTom, cause so far I have been unable to find it on their website, happy to buy it, just need the location of it.

I do have TomTom7 installed on my TP, but no maps obviously.

Re: GPS - HtC Touch Pro

I have been using TomTom for years since first having it on my Sprint 6700 and I have generally had a good experience with it.
I will occasionally use google maps traffic feature since it seems to be the most accurate, but like a previous poster stated if you are in a poor signal area then google maps is out of the question and TomTom will work.

It is a good idea to have at least a 2 Gig memory card to allow yourself free space after installing the maps.

There are no USA maps available for TomTom 7.

I have heard of people hacking maps for the stand alone dash top units and getting them to work, but I've never been able to get them to work.

I would LOVE to get TomTom 7 working, but 6 is fine for now.

I just wish that TomTom would get their heads outta their butts and show some better support for non european countries......

Even though their stuff is rediculously overpriced for just software & maps, I'd still pay for it because there is none better.
