power button resetting instead of sleeping?

okay first thing that started happening was it was resetting constantly like the soft reset was broke. you know when you first press the soft reset it vibrates to let you know it was starting up, but would stay black and vibrate again. over and over until i took the battery out. then i held the soft reset in and turned it on and now it stays on but when i press the power button to put it to sleep it does a soft reset. has this ever happened to anyone else and is there anyway to fix this.. thanks to anyone who can help me out.

Sounds like a hardware problem to me. Are you using a custom rom?
