Can I use Gmail for ActiveSync account?

I can't seem to get a definitive answer on this so I hope someone here can provide me with the info I need.

Using the stock rom for my TP, I have my email account all setup the way I want it to be. I am using my Gmail account as a secondary email account for send/receive using IMAP. It works well for what it does.

I download all my Gmail mail to my desktop mail client (Outlook) so that I can store my emails locally. I download them using a POP3 setup.

For those of you who know, you can only download the Gmail email on one client. If I setup another POP3 access on another client or OS, both instances of Gmail POP3 will fight each other to download the email. So, some email will get on one computer and some on another.

So, to check my Gmail elsewhere, I use IMAP. It's wonderful and generally easy.

On my TP, it's a little annoying because I now have TWO mail accounts. One is the default ActiveSync account that has nothing in it or attached to it, and the other is my Gmail IMAP account.

Can I essentially delete my Gmail IMAP account and add it to my ActiveSync account? I know Gmail finally added support for Exchange and so I guess theoretically it should work. I'm worried that Activesync will actually *download* the email to my phone and thus be that 2nd POP3 like client that'll fight my desktop to download the emails.

Am I assuming correctly here?

Update: Google Sync now allows push email. http://www.google.com/mobile/product...html#p=default

Update 2: Here's the link to set up Activesync using Outlook. http://www.google.com/support/mobile...36&topic=14299

Gmail has support for Exchange for calendar and contacts only. Hopefully sometime in the future they will support mail, and have a true push mail solution.

active sync your contacts/calendar--- Create an email account for your gmail. The only thing I miss is this not being a true "push" solution- But its free.

Re: Can I use Gmail for ActiveSync account?

What annoys me most is when a new message comes in, turns my Mail icon yellow with the amount of new emails I have. So, then I go to the Mail tab on the phone and what do I see? Nothing! Why? Because my primary email, ActiveSync, has no email coming to it. I have to ALWAYS switch to my 2nd email account. ANNOYING!

Is there no solution to this problem?

Re: Can I use Gmail for ActiveSync account?

Why don't you setup leave messages on the server for your pop client? That way you wont have to deal with messages not showing up on your phone.
Have you considered the gmail client solution? It requires java though

Re: Can I use Gmail for ActiveSync account?

Here is how i have my phone setup.
I setup the google calendar and contacts sync. Make sure not to check the email sync options. Instructions on google.com/sync

I then setup imap gmail accnt using the built in outlook client on my phone. When i look at my email notifications through TF3d i see the mails click it and its my gmail.
Maybe you can replicate my setup.

Re: Can I use Gmail for ActiveSync account?

That's the thing, aarondeep! I have exactly as you said: IMAP Gmail account using the built-in Outlook client on my TP.

When I look at my email notifications using TF3D, I first see my ActiveSync account that has no emails. I then have to always switch over to my IMAP Gmail account. I won't default to my IMAP account.

Strangely, my TF3D resets itself randomly often enough that my settings don't stay the same with email. It always goes right back to the ActiveSync email.

Re: Can I use Gmail for ActiveSync account?

Does your gmail account have a * next to it when u go to messaging options where it says tap an account to change settings
I just noticed on mine that when i click the account settings for outlook mail, it opens my google sync stuff which doesn't sync email. Seems like a strange workaround. Try using it
