This is not necessarily the case...I use Garmin, and with data turned off, my phone does not get nearly as warm as with TeleNav, which uses A-GPS exclusively, and therefore gets hotter as it uses both GPS and data for triangulation...I changed from the stock battery to the Telus 1.04.05 battery and it helped a lot with the heat issue...or at least made it a lot better than it was...my TP used to get so hot you could hardly hold it...now it barely gets more than warm...but your best bet on long drives is to change the radio, or get a GPS program that can function without data like Garmin or TomTom...
