EVDO/3G on demand?

Hey all! First time poster in his first month of reflashing for fun and utility.

I have a question I've tried answering a number of ways, but I can't seem to get a definitive answer. I'll break it up into a few minor parts and hopefully someone can help me answer if I'm missing something. The phone I am using is a Sprint HTC Touch, different ROM depending on the day.

1. Is there an ability to set the data connection to shut itself off after a level of idleness is maintained? Preferably, I am thinking about the times I want it to go out, check my email, then tidily kill itself so I don't waste battery life.

2. Are these phones smart enough to know to use Wi-Fi over 3G when available? Again, I want EVDO to connect ONLY when needed.

3. Is there a way to kill 3G when Wi-Fi is present automatically?

In my humble opinion, the towers should only be used and open whenever we need them. I'm sure some people need an always on connection, but I can't seem to find any options in 6.1 or 6.5 that are for us folks that want to consume battery as little battery as possible, while keeping all the features on our phone available.

For more exposition, I'll explain a bit of my problem: When i first got the phone, I noticed battery life just being destroyed when I had email setup on the piece. When I flashed Juicy's this past weekend, I played with the Internet a while, then noticed later the 3G was still connected after 3 hours.

I just want a clean way to set it up so its in use when its needed, not just opening itself up and leaving it up until I throw a frankenstein switch in TF to shut it back off.

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help me, and huge props to everyone who contributes heavily to getting these phones as useful as they really were intended to be.

- John
