Active Sync with Email
I am trying to figure out what the best way to use Active Sync to keep up with my personal email on my computer and on my Touch Pro. For years I have been using the service from mail2web. I have my cox email address auto forwarded to my web2mail email address, then it automatically syncs with my Touch Pro. I just hate when I reply it replies with my mail2web address not my Cox email address. Also it doesn't show read on my Outlook program for Cox.
It costs over a thousand dollars to get Microsoft Exchange. No way I would even consider that. I am only talking about one email address. Any suggestions? Thank you! |
Re: Active Sync with Email
It's been a while since i've had a cox account so i cant remember if they do... but if they support IMAP, i think this may be just what you are looking for!
IMAP will update sent/read on both your TP and your outlook client. you should check into it. |

I know it's no fun to change email address, especially when you've had them forever... but i know for a fact that GMail does support IMAP... and it's free. Otherwise, maybe it's time to switch you mail hosting. |
Re: Active Sync with Email
Urgh, I hate to use free email addresses, because then people don't trust it as much as one you have with your service. Guess it is what it is. I just told the Cox tech support online how sad it is they don't support IMAP.
Thanks anyways! |
Re: Active Sync with Email
Ok one more question, I am playing around with Gmail. Now can you use activesync to push email directly to the phone with Gmail? Or does that require a exchange server? I know I can set it up to check every hour or so, just was hoping to get the push with activesync.

Re: Active Sync with Email
No, there's no push email directly from Google themselves using ActiveSync currently - only calendar and contacts. However, GMail does support IMAP IDLE, which keeps a connection open between the device and the GMail servers and tells the device when there is a new email. You can use something like ImapPusherService to get this working, but it's not 100% stable.

No, on your phone IMAP wont give you a true Exchange push (though they do have something in the works which looks close and very promising)... but you can set it to check like every 5 min. that's not that bad. In outlook however, IMAP does update instantly. Have you looked into something like 1&1? I seem to recall them having pretty reasonable exchange accounts. I used them for a while YEARS ago, before we put in our own exchange server. Let me grab a link for you........... Here you go: http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/MailExchange |
Re: Active Sync with Email
Get a gmail account and forward all your accounts there, or use gmail to POP3 them down.
Once you've done this, you can set gmail to reply with the address that email was originally sent to. This is done on the same page in Settings that you use to configure the additional email accounts. I have 4 email accounts setup in gmail, 3 from hotmail/msn/live, and verizon. They all reply as each address. |
Re: Active Sync with Email
POSSIBLE SOLUTION
Keep your forwarding set up. (cox>mail2web). Incoming: keep as mail2web Outgoing: Change to your cox outgoing mail server Outgoing Credentials: Put in your cox information. Now youll receive thru mail2web, and send thru Cox.*HOWEVER, I AM NOT SURE WHAT EMAIL ADDRESS WILL APPEAR AS THE SENDING ADDRESS* I wonder if you were to set up 2 separate email accounts and set your cox as the default... would it send from your cox acct by default? To everyone talking about IMAP above... IMAP really is the closest you can get to an exchange server. I currently have my computer and tp set up on an imap server. Its awesome. the only downfall I seem to have is that I have folders set up on my imap account.... i can access the folders from outlook, but when i try to open the folders on my tp, the phone sees them, but when i open them they never populate w the mail. anyone else having this problem? |
