memory when using qvga program

Quick question that has been driving me crazy. I have a program that has a qvga resolution that I need to run. The problem is, it uses a lot more memory than the actual program shows in task manager. The program is about 5mb of RAM, but I lose around 15 MB of ram from the available memory which is just enough to prevent me from leaving the program open in the background and running opera on my vzw touch pro.

Pure conjecture here, but is the overhead due to the need for the operating system to stretch the pixels to fill the vga screen? If so, there are lots of video drivers I have seen floating around. Does anyone know if one driver might require less memory than another driver for the stretching process? I had previously run this program on my poor old titan and had no memory problems so the memory it is using is definately more on the touch pro.

Thanks for any help!
