How do I make the htc touch pro not tell me that i have a new text message when I have the text chat session currently opened?

Start > Settings > Sounds & Notifications > Notifications > Select "Messaging: Next Text Message" from "Event"

Make sure "Display message on screen" is unchecked. You shouldn't get a pop up message when you receive a new text message.
