Have a question regarding text msgs

Hello all, this is my first ppc (HTC Touch Pro /w Alltel) and I'm having a slight problem and was wondering if any of you would have an answer.

Everytime I get a text message that has a joke in it or anything like that, it gets cut off by half. And when I send a txt msg to someone it sends two msgs if it's longer than a few words. On my old phone I would be able to receive very long msgs and would be able to see jokes that were forwarded pretty darn easily all in one msg.

Is there any way to correct this?

I know with Sprint, they cut limit text messages to 160 characters. I believe most, if not all, carriers are doing this now. So if it is over 160 characters it will split it into two.

The only weird thing is, is that my fiancee is using a Motorokr and we use the same carrier and she is able to read the full joke on her txt msg, but when she forwards it to my phone, it's cut in half. So is this char limit a change only to the newer phones? My old phone didn't do this =(

hmmmm try asking her how many characters it was when she sent it

Ok, I looked on her phone and it gave a msg after she sent it to me saying "Message delivered to XX as plain text. Destination does not support enhanced msging service".

I counted the letters in the txt msg she sent me on my phone and it was only 103 char's before it cut off. There was 123 letters in the original text msg. Do spaces count?

All things count, including spaces.

And SMS regardless is 160 characters. I've heard of people having issues receiving other parts of split messages.

So it's a common problem not to receive the second part of the message, that sucks..

Basically from what I've gathered here is that these newer phones handle less words than the older ones per msg. Kind of annoying, wish there were a way around it.

I have the same problem with my phone. I searched all over the web and found out that its not our phones...Its a problem with how the network handles a text message over 160 characters, that is being sent from a NON-smartphone phone to a smartphone. I've tested this and found it to be correct.

AFAIK, the cell phones I've used in the past have always split a text message into half if it exceeds 160 chars.
