Ringer playing through earpiece

Is it possible to turn off ringers playing through the earpiece when a call or text or email or anything else comes in, while on a voice call? This is very annoying when talking on the phone, a text message comes in and it plays the ringtone through the earpiece, drowning out the conversation. So far the only way I have figured out how to stop this is to mute the ringer at the start of every voice call. I hope its just a setting that I have totally overlooked.

You're probably not the only one, but I haven't seen much mention of it. For me, there have been a few times when I attempted to answer a call on a headset, but instead of the call connecting through the headset and the ringing stopping, the ringing would continue of the phone and the headset and I couldn't answer the call.
