If a program like google maps use a GPS satellite

To find my position, does data cover that (regular data $15/month, not sure if there's any other kind, but just to clarify), or is that still the same as if I used Sprint Navigation to get GPS directions?

I'm guessing it would still cost extra if the program is using GPS satellites, but I just wanted to check to be sure.

Re: If a program like google maps use a GPS satellite

Google maps uses a data connection, so as soon as you pull it up and click Use GPS, it will find your location and go out to the Internet to download the maps.

If you want to use GPS without a data connection you'd have to use a program like TomTom or iGuidance which stores the maps on an SD card.

Using GPS in general will not cost you anything.

Re: If a program like google maps use a GPS satellite

I'm fine using the data connection, but it is a relief to know that the GPS satellites aren't a seperate charge.

I wasn't too sure, since Sprint's website isn't perfectly clear on whether or not GPS is at an extra price outside of data.

Out of curiosity though, can programs like TomTom be downloaded officially from the maker (and how much are they?) or are they downloadable from third parties?

GPS isnt a seperate charge as said above...that would be infuriating LOL

Sprint only charges in some plans for the use of sprint navigation. Its a seprate program that you would run...and it warns you of any charges if ur plan would incur them. Other than that your good.

Theres some debate about whether you can get TomTom the application itself legally from downloads on the net. I think you can buy the program and the maps from tomtom.com, but you can also find each on the net in places as well. Up to you if you decide its legal or not. (It IS illegal to get maps without paying.) But yah..once you buy it or iguidance or whatever...then it just uses maps stored on your card (about a gigs worrth of space roughly.) So now data connection is needed.,
