Possible Battery Saver...

Hi everyone,

I did a quick search and didn't notice that anyone posted it but when I was going through the phone's settings, due to my battery life being poor, I discovered that the phone will periodically turn gps on. If you go to the homescreen, then click phone, menu, options, Click the services tab, then select location settings. It states that it will allow the network to detect where you are using gps technology. If you disable it, it will still function for E911, and it states you will just need to give permission to an application to use gps. I haven't tested this yet to see if Sprint Nav still works (I'm in an apartment building), but I just wanted to share with everyone incase maybe it could be part of the cause.

Have a great halloween!

I've posted it, been edited it out because I haven't tested it. But what you have said is true with the TREO 800. Changing to location service to 911 Only saved HUGE amount of battery. We figure it's because application are not close or closed properly (Google maps etc) so the internal GPS be will on all the time sucking battery life.

When I disable, the MS Live GPS would not connect anymore and "QuickGPS" would do the same with connection failure as a result.

I don't think applications have the capability of asking for permission. They just fail to work properly unless the location setting is turned on.

Just to update everyone I have tried it for the day today and I did notice an increase in battery life. This may however just be me, I've been using it as I normally do. I did infact also notice that applications that require GPS will not properly function, however since I rarely use Sprint Nav I can simply turn GPS back on when I need to.

I tried this yesterday too. I finally made through an entire day without having to recharge the battery - but a week day will be more of a test becasue I use my phone a lot more then.

Usually when you get battery drain from GPS, is because the forgets to close the application or the application does not close the GPS state. Therefore the GPS runs all day and drains the battery a bit.

Here is a tool I use to check or close the gps state written by Hannip from treocentral.
