Sprint Touch Pro 2 and Bluetooth Freedom Universal Keyboard

I have a bluetooth Freedom Universal Keyboard, model G912, that I've used for years with many other bluetooth devices. It's pretty functional and has many features, including an HID mode and an SPP mode. When using it with other devices, including a Treo 700W, a PPC6700, and a Touch Pro, everything worked as designed. But now that I have a Touch Pro 2, I've noticed something peculiar. While being easier to pair (The process is ever so much less painful), the keys don't work quite as they should. All of the letters and punctuation keys work, except for the comma and period key, but I can't get access to any of the special symbols above the number row unless I have the Soft Input Keyboard open. Close the SIP, and you lose the ability to get at those characters. (no exclamation point, no paranthesis, no asterisks, etc) but open it again, and you gain that functionality again.
There is an FN button on this keyboard but it doesn't activate the keys. However, the shift key causes the shift light on the phone's keyboard to light up.This behavior is quite peculiar. Anyone else notice it, or have a suggested fix? It's as if while the SIP is closed, the phone is using the hardware keyboard's keymapping, but when the SIP is open, it switches to a universal HID mapping.
