So where does WM6.5.1 fit into microsofts plan?

Read an post on Engadget that said RTM for WinMo7 is on track to happen less than a year from now, which would give 6.5 a VERY short run. So where does 6.5.1 fit into this release plan? Is it just an idea or what? Hardly time to release another one before 7 comes out if this time line is correct.

EDIT: Whoops, just realized this probably belongs in some sort of general forum. Mods feel free to move if necessary.

most device out now will not offically support winmo 7 so i assume that 6.5.1 will be the finished product on devices that get a 6.5 rom!!

as it stands now winmo 7 will need a 1gig processer and the only device like that right now is the touch hd 2 so right now its the only device out that may get winmo 7

that makes sense to me! since all 6.5 phones currently won't be able to run wm7 (less possibly hd2 as noted) i bet 6.5.1 will be msofts way of saying "oh, but you get something too" and probably right around when wm7 debuts, hopefully sooner than later

Re: So where does WM6.5.1 fit into microsofts plan?

6.5.1...is IMHO...a stepping stone to WM7. Since "supposedly" our current devices won't be able to run WM7...we have the following alternatives....

1) Upgrade devices (like most of us upgrading to the TP2 from the TP less than a year with the device)

2) Wait, or cook up a ROM with a "stripped" down WM7 so it'll run on our current devices.

3) Wait for an app/tweak that allows us to "overclock" our current processors...um...may nueTool??

Re: So where does WM6.5.1 fit into microsofts plan?

I am not as anxious for the WM 7 OS as I am the devices that will have the required hardware.

As someone else said already, the hardware onthose devices will be like nothing on the market right now. The Touch HD2 is the only thinkg on th emarket right now (not even in USA yet) that might be capable of running WM7.

Just imagine when we start getting sliding qwerty devices that have the required specs. Hopefully thinner, with awesome cameras that record HD video and take good pictures (with a flash!), FM transmitters (so you can send your phone's audio to any FM radio), lots of RAM/ROM/CPU, a battery that lasts 2 days, a GPS that locks in seconds, and whatever else I might be missing right now.

I don't know if we'll have all of that in an HTC device in a year or not, but we have all the tech to make it happen right now if HTC or some other OEM decided to do it. And I know on WM7, at least some of that is in the minimum required specs.

So the OS will probably be gravy. It's the hardware that I'm looking forward too.

Re: So where does WM6.5.1 fit into microsofts plan?

WM7 is not a replacement for WM6.5

As microsoft said before they plan to run and support both at the same time, so the lifespan of WM6.5 would be equivalent to WM7.

The goal as stated is WM6.5 license would be a lot cheaper and for use in the low end market for cheap phones and other devices.

WM7 will capture the high end devices for business and media.

above poster is correct. it's going to be a dual OS strategy. both will be out at the same time, wither neither expecting to have a short lifespan.

It would seem logical that once hardware capable of running WM7 is $150 (subsidized) or less then 6.5.x will be dead. Of course no one knows for sure yet what specs will run WM7 well.

This is not true, its a race to the bottom as well..similar to netbooks. think free wm6.5 phones with contract or a calculator for 30 bucks or music players running wm6.5

While wm7 supported devices will obviously be well specced, many people will be happy with cheaper devices for simpler tasks. Not everyone wants a super computer in their pocket but may want to have something above a dumb phone.

If anything were to kill WM6.5 it would be android as even though it is cheaper then wm7 will be, can it beat free.
