Re: How To: Configure GPS

saidin69, out of curiosity, how long is "pretty quick" for your sat lock? Is that with aGPS?

I still can't get a lock in under 3 or 4 minutes.

Ok, I just turned on Google maps. I had aGPS ( 500 meters ) almost immediately. Within 20 seconds I had 7 satellites and a ( 20 meter ) lock.

Thanks, that gives me a reference. I'd take under 20 seconds right now. I think your first fix on Google Maps is cell id based though.

And put it this way, even when I'm on Amtrack between Boston and NY my phone keeps it's lock and I can watch the travel on Google maps.

Yeah the cell lock (aGps) happens immediately but the lock is only within 500 to 1,000 meters. within 30 seconds I get satelites and the lock goes to within 40 to 20 meters usually.

Cell ID (500 - 1000m) < aGPS (5-10m). aGPS is GPS, with either location calculated at server (PDE) or at the MS, assisted by info from the server (satellite ephemeris, altitude database, etc). From what your saying, it's hard to know whether you're getting the benefit of aGPS. Without a way to examine messages over the control plane, I don't know of any real way to tell (except by time). When I had aGPS working well on my Mogul, I would consistently (>80% at least) get GPS quality locks in under 10 seconds.

Anyway, interesting conversation (if I haven't hijacked the thread).

Re: How To: Configure GPS

This has seemed to have caused a bigger problem for me. Sprint TP2. GPS was working, though poorly, often couldn't find any satellites w/o running QuickGPS first. Installed sprint cab and now google maps can't even initialize gps. Went to uninstall cab, its not listed. No details of cab mentioned so I don't know if there are just registry changes I can revert. I tried the gpsOne settings and I can't get the drivers to install (windows7) it won't take those files listed. So there is no HTC Diagnostic Interface device in my ports for step 7. Totally stuck. Any ideas? I'm down to hard reset, but rather not do that. Thanks everybody!

I was kinda worried about running the Sprint cab on my TP2 since that was originally posted in Aug and the TP2 for Sprint was just released in Sep. Sounds like we need to know if the TP2 is already updated to a certain degree, before running the cab.

Re: How To: Configure GPS

Telus TP2 with the stock rom. I ran the cab and now the gps gets several sats in seconds and I am inside. Before I could be outside and it would take a minute or two just to find 2 to 3 sats.
Huge difference.

Neat coincidence: I used the 'track using GPS' feature in the Bing mobile client's mapping tool with my TP2 on Amtrak between NY and Boston earlier today. It worked great!
