TELUS TP2 worldwide using GSM SIM card
I found 2 new videos on youtube showing a "unlock code" that allows to use Rogers / Fido gsm SIM card (probably any gsm provider's sim card would work as well)

Re: TELUS TP2 worldwide using GSM SIM card
All the carriers should provide the phone with GSM capabilites locked. You should be able to call their global services division and request a subsidy code. Type in the code and you can use a foreign GSM SIM. The problem is that the phone will most likely be locked out from US GSM carriers.
For the devices to make it through the FCC, both the CDMA and GSM radios had to be tested. HTC got around this, in a letter that was posted here in PPCgeeks, by saying that the GSM will be locked out for US provider's SIMs. This is the one and only reason that I'm upgrading from my TP1. I travel to Europe frequently and was tired of having to switch devices, contacts, etc. With this phone, I'll be able to use all my applications, contacts, tethering, regardless of where I step off the plane. CAN'T WAIT!!!!! EDIT: Do not go to the website in the video and PAY for an unlock code. All the CDMA providers should provide you with a subsidy code for free. You are locked into a CDMA contract so they don't have to worry about using your phone on another network because you would have to pay early termination anyway. Tell them you prefer not to use their overpriced global services and would like to use your own foreign sim. Last edited by isdnmatt; 08-05-2009 at 01:45 PM. |

Re: TELUS TP2 worldwide using GSM SIM card
how does this CDMA/GSM function work??? Does the phone switch to GSM when u pop a SIM in? or does it have somewhere where you can turn the SIM on or something??
Can someone clarify?? I love that feature of this phone, cant wait to exploit it. |

Re: TELUS TP2 worldwide using GSM SIM card
I popped in a SIM card and it gave a few messages that enabled the "global" part of the phone. But eventually it said that the SIM card wasn't a valid Telus SIM card and reverted back to CDMA.
It did open up a few extra options in Settings -> Comm manager -> Phone where you could pick between CDMA Only/GSM Only/Global and I was able to search for GSM networks and found the rogers network. |

Re: TELUS TP2 worldwide using GSM SIM card
I'm very curious how this will all work out. I'm on Sprint and I'm leaving for a 1 year tour to Afghanistan in Jan. Waiting for this phone so I can have the best of both worlds. Some of my base has wifi so I can use skype. When I'm out of the wifi I want to have the ability to use a prepaid SIM. If I can't unlock it then it'll be a deal breaker for me.

Re: TELUS TP2 worldwide using GSM SIM card
OK, as a Sprint CDMA user with the Touch Pro 2, here is something that would be ideal is me:
* Buy a SIM card from a worldwide GSM provider and get a US Assigned phone number that anyone from the US could call and reach me while in Europe or South America (or almost anywhere). Is this possible? If so, who is the GSM provider? |
