Is there a point to have insurance?

Based on my understanding, which I did not realize until recently, if your phone has issues you can take it into the store and they will fix it for you. But if it has water damage you need insurance. Is that correct?

Because until now I thought everytime I was getting it fixed it was bc I had insurance. But they would have fixed it anyway?

I'm saying, if that's true, with a $100 deductible, it definitally is not worth 8 bucks a month!

Re: Is there a point to have insurance?

so lets start with what the insurance is. for the 8 dollars, you are paying 4 bucks for "esrp" and 4 bucks for "erp".
esrp= equipment service and repair program aka sprint service center
erp= equipment replacement program aka asurion

although you are covered for 1 year under manufacturer warranty, that warranty is serviceable by sprint. they will typically fix most things for you that they deem not physical damage. they dont have to do this. it is in their power to make you claim warranty via htc, samsung, whoever. they usually dont do this though, as they wnat your business.
after the 1 year is up, they usually wont service your phone, but try to sell you on an upgrade.
esrp gaurantees that they will service your phone in store for the lifetime of the phone that you are paying it. also, if they cant fix it, they will give you a new one, usually same day. with just the manufacturer warranty, they will make you send it in to the phone maker. that can be a 3 to 6 week wait, and your at the mercy of a off site tech, that may or may not deem your phone unrepairable.
the esrp is a life saver, as you can usually use it to replace bricked phones, and things you may have caused using sites like ppcgeeks.
erp, aka asurion does have an addional 100 dollar deductible. the only time you should have to use this is if your device is lost, stolen, water damaged, or physically broken as in cracked screen or smashed in to pieces.
i also think this is valuable as they run out of stock a lot and have to give you a comparable model.
i used this loophole to go from touch vogue to touch pro to touch pro 2 using no upgrade. they just offer you the next model up.
more recently i had to file a lost device claim on an epic 4g (the old one) and got an evo3d. its a good way to get a new phone with out extending your contract or using your upgrade.
personally, i find that it is worth keeping until the phone can be found on ebay or craigslist for under 100 dollars, and by then, ive usually gotten a newer model anyway.

Re: Is there a point to have insurance?

It's just even your "upgrade from epic to evo3d cost you the $100 deductable+a year of insurance at $96/year.... You can get an evo3d for the same $196 online (used but sometimes you get accessories too) (I said a year of insurance because before then, there is the free warenty to cover it)

unless the phone keeps resale value well (where it will cost more than $200 after a year), I'm not finding insurance worth it. Since like you said, before the first year, you have manufacturer warranty.

A contract is normally 2 years, if you have to switch out a phone after the first year, you can pick up a pretty good phone for $200 (unless you bought something like the newer htc/iphone/galaxy phones that still resell well). Then after another year you're up for another upgrade anyways. Without insurance you save $192 over 2 years. That pretty much pays for most of the new upgrade/subsidized phone.

1 difference being for that 100+96 I got a brand new in box replacent that comes with a new 1 year warranty, as opposed to someone else's possibly over flashed, abused, end of life junk. I know how I treat a phone, and its not nice. Lol.

Re: Is there a point to have insurance?

Everyone has made great points on the pros cons of insurance. I think the main thing to look at if you’re not a techie or have cash to spend/bid on phones like on ebay or take chances getting someone else used car so to speak, is do you lose, break your phone often? If so, I suggest Sprint or Best Buy’s insurance for you.

Both have pros and cons too.

Sprint has $100 deductible to replace phone and covers theft, loss and water damage.
If I’m not mistaken, Bestbuy’s plan doesn’t replace theft, loss and water damage but if you have a problem with phone, they swap out at no issue and or give you loaner phone until yours is fixed/replaced.

Pick your own battle. Hope that helps.
