Re: which rom is right for me?

I've been contemplating flashing too. Been lurking the forums for a few weeks, reading about pros and cons of the top ROMS.

What I am looking for is a "bare bones" ROM (or a way to uninstall the un-needed apps). I don't need all the added bull that comes with 6.5 from Sprint (sprint tv, nfl, youtube, marketplace, nascar, etc). Who really reads pdf files on their phones? I don't.

The only thing I use my phone for is PHONE CALLS, texting, and the occasional web browsing session. I find the 6.5 ('official' sprint upgrade) pretty annoying to use when you have to go through 4 steps to text someone, and 4 steps to get back to your home screen. Don't even get me started on the ridiculous method of deleting texts. What ever happened to "tap - hold - delete"?

Sure these ROMS are pretty, but for me, it's useless eye candy. This is why I never updated my 5 year old Mogul. I prefer the plain-jane Windows Mobile look, and it works for what I want it to do.

Don't get me wrong, I am by NO means bashing ANY of the ROMS, but what about those of us who don't need their phone to tell us the weather by flash lightning on their screens, when they are sitting next to a window and KNOW it's raining with lightning?

That's why people have made Kitchens available to do what you want with your phone. I have one of them and been working on my own personal ROM. Its the stock ROM with everything I wanted stripped out gone. Most of them are pretty easy to use. I am by far not a programmer by any means at all but I got it to work.

Most of cooking your own ROM is trial and error and Hours and Hours of reading. Yea its a lot of time invested into it but its a good feeling at the end when you have created something that is you or cleaned out by you. that's going to be the best thing for you if you want a clean ROM and get rid of all the junk is to learn it yourself.

Just wanted to say Thanks to all the Incredible Chiefs out there for the amount of work that they put into creating there masterpieces. I have spent the last few months working on learning how to cook and it really is a TON of work.

Re: which rom is right for me?

I did stumble upon a pretty stripped down ROM that people use when they want to boot to Android. I have to search around again for it, and read the details. Maybe I will try that one. Not sure how "stripped" it is though lol

go here:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=118553
and make your own ROM. it's like Burger King, it's your way. If you have a few hours, you can play around with it. you can also find the oem ROMs in the custom ROM section, so if you screw up, you can go back to stock.

Re: which rom is right for me?

Also saw one called Bare Naked Rom which seemed very low on resources.

Still don't see what your problem is with text messaging. For example, to go from text messaging to the home screen, have you tried the END button? That's 1 step. You can still tap-hold-delete texts plus the new way allows you to delete multiple messages much more quickly. Ways I send a text message only take 2 or 3 steps before typing.

Bare Naked Rom has WinMo 6.1 and the option of Sense 2.1 so you can be all Plain Jane.

Re: which rom is right for me?

My problem with text messages is this:

Say I am at the home screen, and I want to text. I have to tap 'People' / 'All People' / the persons name / send message / and only THEN can I tap the space to type, or hit the minimized keyboard. Sure, I can assign a favorite to eliminate ONE step, but my point is you have to go through all of this just to send a text.

Tapping 'start' / text / etc etc etc is even worse.

To close, is even worse, depending if I am closing one text, or all of them.

Sure I can use the END button, but that doesn't help if I am in multiple conversations.

How is having to put a little "X" on each message faster?

Re: which rom is right for me?

Putting an "X on multiple messages then hitting done is way quicker than "tap and hold, delete, OK" then repeat.

You are going about the texting in a way too long route. Hit the texts tab and there's a button to compose. Type the name and message. That's 2 steps till typing.

You just have to learn to be more efficient. A PPC is your friend. If you do not wish to end a phone call while texting, Start -> Home will also get you to the Home page quickly or the Back hard key that looks like a left arrow is also helpful. There are multiple ways to do things so if the way you are trying seems ridiculous, then try another way.

If you just prefer 6.1 with the old sense you can try the Rom I posted which is very bare or you can disable sense and use the WinMo interface.

Re: which rom is right for me?

Thanks for the posts. I'm gonna sit down tomorrow and get this done. Not sure which rom I'll try first but I'll figure that out tomorrow. I've been reading the steps required to flash on the tp2 via this thread, and If I'm correct at step 7 is when I do something with the rom, what exactly do I do? I know there were instances where the Titan could be bricked if you didn't do something properly, I want to make sure I don't run into that issue.

Also, is there a new radio out that has enabled bluetooth ICS while retaining the ability to tether via usb?
