i'm using the HTC wall charger with the usb adapter cable that came with the phone, and I've used it so much the cable has come loose from the plug. What is the benefit of using the proprietary HTC cable? I've only used it for charging and connection to a computer (data tranfer, tethering). It seems to work the same as a standard mini-usb jack.

I think the extra pins are to support additional features (AV accessories, hands-free kits, etc.) I've always used a standard Mini-USB cable for PC link, and a wide variety of mini-USB chargers (mainly BB & Moto) and I haven't had any issues.

I can second that. For charging I use an old razor v3m charger and any old mini usb for data. I actually never used the charger or cable that came with the phone lol
