screen stays on after receiving sms

I have a Verizon HTC Touch Pro 2 with official VZ 6.5 ROM update.
When I receive a new sms, the screen comes on and stays on indefinately. Needless to say this is a real battery killer.

is there a solution to this problem?

Go to settings-All settings-power-advanced then adjust.
