Post Would you abandon TP2 for Verizon's Skype ability?

Verizon just announced at MWC10 they will be allowing their Android phones to use Skype to call any other Skype client world wide. http://tinyurl.com/yeeg32j

That is big news and it makes me wonder, hmmm... would I switch for that? What about you?

I don't think it's officially supported anymore, but works fine for me.

I would just skype on my tp2. Not real impressed with android currently. A little too dumbed down for my liking, and some things just seem more difficult

You don't have to switch... You can do this already with Skype on your TP2!

Re: Would you abandon TP2 for Verizon's Skype ability?

Most of the voip applications run down the battery and do a horrible reliability in sound on cell unless you are near a 3g tower and don't move much. I can't imagine the skype client being much better. If your really cell dependant use the normal phone client and the voice plan and wait for a good 4g deployment for any kind of serious voip over cell..

Re: Would you abandon TP2 for Verizon's Skype ability?

it would be alrite to use it while your at home or office, but on the Move your call quality would suffer.

But it would still be nice for home use. especially of you already have a second cell phone instead of a land line for your home now

Re: Would you abandon TP2 for Verizon's Skype ability?

Two questions, as I'm not quite sure of the implications of this:

I currently use Skype on my Verizon TP2, using WiFi when available, when I'm traveling internationally. With this new announcement, is there potential for me to lose this capability?

If this continues to work, which I certainly hope it will, I guess there's no chance it will also work over Verizon's 3G?

It works over Verizon's 3G now and when using SIM cards when traveling as long as you have a data package on the SIM. I don't think that the feature is going to go anywhere for exisiting phones. Verizon never has blocked specific addresses, so I don't think they'll start now. Especially since a WM wasn't one of the listed compatible devices.

I hate that they put this out like such a revolutionary idea. I've been using Skype since my 6700.

Thanks for the reply.

I just checked and you're right - Skype works fine on my VZW TP2 with just 3G and no WiFi. I thought I had tried this once before and it didn't, but something else must have been going on.

When I travel, I subscribe to Skype's Unlimited calls to US/Canada for $2.95 for the month I'm gone - I can then call home as much as I want when WiFi is available, for negligible cost.

And I've just purchased an EKit SIM card, which will give me a U.S. number for my family to call me, and my rate for those incoming calls is only $.19/minute in the places where I'm traveling, which is also quite reasonable for when WiFi isn't available.
