Trying to configure University e-mail...

Hi guys,
Firstly I am using a HTC Touch Pro 2 (duuh lol) and my network is Orange UK. I want my email configured to Stirling University. I kinda figured out how to recieve emails but couldn't actually send any. I just couldn't find the outgoing server settings, here is a snippet from the actual manual they give you at Uni:

Incoming mail server

Student mail server: mail.students.stir.ac.uk Please note that IMAP access (and not POP3) is available on this server.

Staff email server: mail.stir.ac.uk
The server provides both POP3 and IMAP access. We strongly recommend using IMAP if at all possible as there are a number of serious shortcomings in the POP3 protocol. Above all, be advised that by default, POP3 clients
remove messages from the server after downloading them.

Outgoing mail server

Server name: smtp.stir.ac.uk

Note:
This server can only be accessed from the campus network or the VPN. If you are accessing your email from a different network (e.g. from home or another university), you must use that network provider’s SMTP server.

IMAP Settings:
Server: imap.students.stir.ac.uk
Port: 993
SSL Encyrption: Yes
SMTP Settings:
Server: smtp.stir.ac.uk
Port: 587 (465 may be required for some clients)
SSL Encryption: Yes
Authenticate : Yes
Username : <Student's email address>
Password : <Regular network password>

As you can see it says something about using the network providers SMTP.. like wtf
I know a freind that has hooked his BB to the Uni E-mail crap but my HTC is not working for me
I would really really really really appreciate it if anyone had a solution for this problem, I'm thinking its rather simple but really can't do it!
Thank you.

Re: Trying to configure University e-mail...

They are suggesting you use your phone service provider's SMTP server as the Univ. server is behind the firewall and not reachable on your phone. If you can do that, great. If not, you can use the gmail smtp server for outgoing. Set it up to send on behalf of and it can still show the return address of your univ. e-mail address. I do it for my home address. Check with Orange and see if they have an outgoing server for you to use. If not, the gmail option does work.

Hmm sounds like it could be what I'm waiting for :/

What would the gmail outgoing server be then?

Oh wait. I can recieve but when I try sending something it says: The message could not be sent. Check that you have network coverage and that your account information is correct. Then try sending again.
