Auto brightness is one of the first things I turn off after a flash.
It definitely hurts battery life & these things are virtually unuseable in bright sun anyway (I would kill to have the screen in my P2 look like my ipod touch in bright sun) ~John

anything auto is going to use more battery... it's the tradeoff you get for being lazy
 I just keep mine at 60% and get fantastic battery life
