i dont see the option to add custom ringtones for texts...

to use your own sounds for texts and alerts the file has to be placed in the my device/windows directory or my device/application data/sounds

From File Explorer, paste the ringtones you want to use either in the Application Data folder, or the Windows folder.

Mine actually show up with the files in the My Documents folder.

No. It's a simple copy and paste process. If you download your ringers, save them to the My Documents folder, or the My Ringtones folder in My Documents. If you're going to use them for text messages, leave them in the My Documents folder.

For texts and MMS the Windows folder doesn't seem to work for me. If I put it in Application Data > Sounds, it works every time, all formats
