BT Receivers/Software That Provide Voice Directions?
 

I've looked at the threads about the Holux Slim and M-1000 and am wondering if anyone is using a receiver/software that supports voice turn-by-turn directions.

Also, has anyone paired two BT devices at the same time (headset and GPS) to get the voice turn-by-turn directions?

Get the M-1200, not the M-1000. I just got mine and I love it, it's so tiny that I just hang it on my keychain, ordered it from buygpsnow.com and got a free vent mount and free shipping for $60. I use it with Tomtom to get voice directions, or you can also use Google Maps or Live Search without voice.

How is the 1200 different from the 1000? I didn't understand the explanation on their site. So maps and software for TomTom 6 are $150 plus the Holux at about $60?

I think it's worth 10 bucks to have a GPS that you can keep on your keychain and bring anywhere rather than a brick which you'll probably leave in your car. Besides, you usually get lost when you aren't expecting it right? You typically have your keys and phone right? So even if you aren't driving, if you're walking, or riding with somewhere else, you have your entire GPS system in your pockets. DEFINITELY worth $10 if you ask me.

Okay, here you go, this is a similar picture to one I saw that convinced me to buy this one, sorry for the crappy pic. All I had was my phone and we all know how that works out. ;)

So the 1200 is about the size of the GPSlim 240? Is the 1200 the one on your keychain in the photo?

Forgive the stupid question, but obviously I am new at this: The Holux info says the Smart2Go software with "full navigation" has only a 7-day trial. Do Google or Windows Live offer turn-by-turn navigation for free, or must I buy a $150 map/software package like TomTom6 to get this?

It's fine. I just got mine two days ago, so I'm new at this too. Yes, that's the M-1200 I have. It's (roughly) the same size as the GPSlim 240, however it has the MTK chipset in it which gives it much better battery life, this is the same chipset as in the M-1000.

I never even tried the Smart2Go software they sent since it's only a 7 day trial. Google Maps and Live Search will both give you turn by turn directions, however they won't be spoken. I assume software like Smart2Go will speak them, but I use Tomtom which speaks the directions as well. Consider the turn by turn directions on Google Maps and Live Search as sort of an addition to a mapping software, whereas Tomtom is meant to be GPS software. It has multiple different extras while Google Maps and Live Search are very simply draw a line on the map of where you're going to go and tell you at the bottom what turn to make next.

I suggest that you get the GPS and try them out and see what you think. Perhaps you don't care enough right now to pay for something like Tomtom, but I have a feeling that in the end you won't be satisfied with just a simple route line and text telling you your upcoming turns.

I currently use GoogleMaps on my Mogul and it provides turn-by-turn directions when you request directions. My question is, does Google with a paired GPS know where you are based on your position, and then instruct you what to do next?

No, you get turn by turn directions or google can follow your position, not both at once, so you can switch from the directions to your position and estimate where you are to the next direction then switch back to the directions to get what to do next... its hard to explain, hopefully that was an ok explanation...

how is the reception on that unit u have pictured there, lets say you vent mount it, does it keep track constantly or intermittently? also how is that chip you mentioned compared to the sirfstar III?

All the Holux ones work awesome... they will work perfect... i can use my 240 in my pocket inside the car and it tracks just fine...
