Telenav just released for Mogul 6800

TeleNav GPS Navigator has been released for the Alltel Blackberry 8830 and Sprint HTC 6800 (Also known as the Mogul). The Blackberry 8830 is compatible with TeleNav GPS Navigator version 5.1, and features 3D Maps and Traffic Re-routing. The Mogul uses TeleNav GPS Navigator version 5.2, which also includes favorite organization and address sharing.

You can download the TeleNav GPS Navigator application onto this phone by going to your phone's Browser and entering the following URL for your carrier:

Sprint: http://ota.telenav.com/ota/sn/
Alltel: http://ota.telenav.com/ota/al/

The Spint Mogul does require an external GPS receiver in order to get driving directions. If you do not have one, you can order it through the TeleNav Store.

Wtf i thought we werent going to need a receiver?

Let's hope that Rev. A update will enable GPS so we can use this without a GPS receiver.

I think that what most are hoping for is that "if" Sprint releases Telenav or Sprint Navigator available for the device it won't require the external module. There is still hope, but it is dwindling.

that's bogus... I should pay a monthly fee AND buy a piece of hardware???

No freaking way. No one is going to buy that, especially when you can get bundled software that will do the same thing for free with most external receivers, not to mention GOOGLE MAPS which is free and probably more accurate (although turn by turn is sort of in its infancy with google right now, I'm sure they'll add more support for it soon- watching your route plotted and a blinking "you are here" dot on a satellite image map with live traffic info is something way cooler than telenav can offer).

Now, the fact that its not using AGPS is starting to make me think... The device does have AGPS for e911, I know because I've disabled it always being on to save battery power. And doesn't the AGPS need to function in order to pass legally mandated standards for CDMA networks? Why would they opt to write TeleNav for an external receiver unless:
a) The AGPS driver was unstable at release (as the first set of rumors go), and when it is fixed the Telenav will be able to use it as it does all other phones.

b) The AGPS driver is actually FINE, but TeleNav might know that soon we will get our stand-alone GPS functionality working, so the software was written to use a standard WM GPS port instead of the AGPS signals. Unfortunately, they might have jumped the gun in releasing the Mogul version, and the standalone mode of the GPSone chip hasn't been enabled yet. So they are requiring that you buy the external receiver if you want to use it now!

Both are just theories, although I'm leaning more towards b... I know, it might be wishful thinking, but doesn't it seem odd that this is the first device that TeleNav supported an external receiver for? Doesn't the AGPS on the phone work for e911 and sprint family locator (I checked, the mogul is listed as compatible devices)? If so, why else wouldn't they use it?

Makes you go hmmm....

Well the thing to remember is that Telenav has written an app for almost all of the recent PPC phones on the market, and some Smartphones.. though none of them had support for aGPS -- they all need an external GPS.

I am not sure who the target market is for something like that.. Let me sell you a piece of hardware that allows you to do this for free -- and then I shall charge you $10/month to do that. Seems odd, but I guess there is a sucker born every minute.

I'm still "hoping" for the Q4 software update but I'm not holding my breath.
